In Red & Black

In the midnight kitchen,
that unblinking red eye is nothing
but the coffee machine.
Someone forgot to turn it off.
A pearl-handled knife’s left lying
on the counter, catching moon-gleams
that flit through curtains drooping
at the window, cold reflection
of a distant, solar burning.
On the table, diamonds scattered
among hearts and spades. What was it
in the cards, that shuffled
this house to such a stillness?
